eBay Nigeria Scam Exposed

It’s easy to focus on the $6 billion money train that is the eBay “digital marketplace” (or auction site in everyday language – “Internet Marketers, Are you on the eBay Money Train Yet?” But if you’re not careful, you could fall prey to scam artists.

With a worldwide audience, that set of Pez dispensers could evoke a fierce bidding war between collectors in Belgium and Thailand, and the tussle could boost your sale price quite substantially. But again, beware the sharks out there.

Last week, I put up a cell phone for auction on eBay and within 4 hours, a buyer took up the “Buy It Now” option, purchasing the phone at the price I specified. This certainly was a bright prospect for my eBay plans. What’s more I got a PayPal payment notification from the UK buyer, along with an email that read:

Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included
an estimated cost of shipping to Nigeria for my son
company. Please let me know when you get a
notification from ebay that Slong Girl sent you a
payment. Send me the tracking number via auspost as
soon as you ship the item. I am having difficulties
getting across to my son that manage her father
company over there. I gave his address to paypal for
verification and it has been confirmed so it should be
in the payment notification.
His correct mailing address again is:

Atolagbe Agbede
03 Ijaiye Road
Opp Mobil Filling Station
Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos
Nigeria 23401

Thanks and I hope to read from you as soon as possible
cos I want this to get to him at the shortest period
of time.
Slong,
girl

A UK buyer asking for a cell phone to be sent to Nigeria?

Plus the PayPal “payment notification” looked dubious. The payment amounts were all wrong and it came from “Services@Paypal.com” instead of the regular “service@paypal.com” (a hallmark of scam artists = poor spelling).

Even better, the email was sent from: “pp.notification.status@post.com” and “pp.notification1@gmail.com” – pretty poor email spoofing if you ask me.

As if these weren’t bad enough, the “bidder” had the audacity to send more fake email:

Dear andrew wee,

We hereby notify you of the transaction that was effected by Slong Girl for the

payment of the item(s) purchased from you on eBayand provide guidelines on how your funds

would be released.

A notification of this transaction on PayPal as been sent to you immediately the payment

was effected, and we are yet to read from you. Please be informed that the money has

been deducted from Slong Girl account and is pending on PayPal database.

This money will be released into your account as soon as the tracking number for the shipment

has been sent to us at pp.notification.status@mail.com for verification. You are adviced

to ship this item and send the tracking number you recieve from the post office to us at the

above email address.

We will send you an email as soon as the funds has been released into your account, until then

we wait for the tracking number for the shipment. Ship the Item to the address included in the

email used to you notify you of the payment for your item(s) ONLY!

Thank you using PayPal.

This was sent from the same mail.com and gmail.com emails.

So the scam works in this way:

  • They do a bait and switch on you: A US or UK eBay buyer will request for the item to be sent to Nigeria.
  • They’ll mail you saying the payment is “held” pending shipment of the item and for you to send them the tracking number.
  • If you fall for this, you’ll ship the item.
  • They’ll disappear.

If you’re unsure, mail eBay’s customer service and get assistance.

Other telltale scam artist signs:

  • The account was created a few hours or a few days ago
  • Yours is the first item they have bought (they seem to like cell phones, PDAs and small electronic equipment they can presumably offload into the black market easily)

Checking the eBay site a day later, I found the person’s account had been suspended.

They are persistant though, here’s a followup email I received:

Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included
an estimated cost of shipping to Nigeria for my son
company. Please let me know when you get a
notification from ebay that Slong Girl sent you a
payment. Send me the tracking number via auspost as

If you’re newer to eBay, do realize that the protocol is to receive payments BEFORE you ship items to the buyer.

PayPal provides some level of consumer protection for buyers, but you need to be savvy if you’re a seller.

Update: A buddy who is an eBay powerseller recommends listing items at the Bidz marketplace (which has some similarities to eBay – take note, it’s primarily focused on jewellery auctions).

Wow, I can’t believe this stuff has been going on for years now. I was selling some CDJ turntables on EBay and had a “woman” from the US use the buy it now feature. She is now requesting that I send it to her son that is studying in Lagos Nigeria…..then later in the message says she will cover the shipping costs to her daughter? Wait a minute lady, I thought this was for your son?! I’d like to think this isn’t a scam, but I am sure it is. Will wait for either a real payment to go through, or the fake e-mails regarding the payment.

  5. notozell

I got the same one too and i sent one items to London ( which is the same address from Ebay. and one to nigieria…until not i will lost the one from nigieria but am still hopping that the one from London will come back to me some day….why the Polish not do anything about this ? even they know where the address is ? dumm Nigieria !!!

I posted my fiance’s race car on craigslist and this one lady told me her whole story about her being in the marines and this and that and how she wanted to buy the race car for her son.. she said that she would hire a pick up agent to come pick it up and she would wire more money to my pay pal account and extra 950 dollars.. my soon to be sister in law told me to be careful not to get scammed because a lot of people have been around here.. and well today i just checked my email.. she said that i should have already got an email from pay pal.. i did get an email from pay pal but it said that i couldn’t get any of the money until i went to a western union and sent 900 to that agent and then i had to come home and scan it and send that to pay pal.. i don’t know if it is a scam or not.. because if it is they are going above and beyond.. they made a face book website with this nigerian boy.. and then when i typed in the full address this website came up so i am going to tell that lady that i can’t help her..thank goodness for google..

its out ragius that these people can do this. I had the say scam done to me with a watch that i sold on ebay, money was suppose to be held with city bank awaiting the arrival of the watch then money would be sent to me. 12 months ago they scamed me of 1200 dollars on a compentation of 250,000 us dollars would be paided to me from the nigerian govenment because of the fraud and now today they are trying again wanting me to pay another 1000 dollars to pay for insurance and VAT fees so the compensation check can be sent to me but i am not falling for it again.. The mongrels they should be shot

  9. darren

dont pay any money to western union to nigeria they get your money and you are left with nothing except heart ach and sorrow, and i tell you now you will even fill like doing yourself in sometime. if it has gone to nigeria its gone for good. they go to all extreams just to try and get a dollar from you.

Hey!… i am so happy my friend told me to check the scam on google as it nearly happened to him. i put my nokia N97 on ebay for £89.99 starting bid and £250 buy it now price ( i didn’t even think it was worth £150) with in 10minutes someone from ‘ Nigeria,Lagos’ wanted to buy it now for £250. I was happy and shocked at the same time. The fact i bragged about it on facebook stopped me from selling it as my friend warned me it nearly happened to him. Your comments helped me thank you very much as soon i was about to send it off. Exactly what you said is exactly what they sent me in emails. Thank you.

I also, was almost burnt on the Nigerian scam this morning……..notes to take when scamming; they want to expedite the inovice process from you….lol….what, you mean they cant wait to pay you? what person is anxious to let go of $700 right away? and if anything involves a buyer living in one country yet wanting the item shipped to another, cancel immediatly!…they also send you fake pay pal emails to make you think their money is safe in your account!….be safe out there….

  19. amba patrick

The same thing happened to me, the same thing happened to me. Am sick of this! My sincere condolences to those that where scammed. But why can’t we all open your eyes and see. . . For God sake, these guys are thieves and we have them in all countries. So why don’t we all protect yourselves by doing the right thing “receiving our cash before shipping the item”.

They think they are smart (funny). All we have to do is to prove them wrong by making inquiries and seeking information.

Remember, not having enough money is as bad as bad as having more than enough. BEWARE and PROTECT your self.

  20. amba patrick

I read this post with a huge smile on my face. Don’t be greedy! you have the right to ignore such messages just the same way you ignore spam emails that ask if you want to enlarge any body part.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY!!! I was sent the same email but it looked more real and all the emails I got were grammatically correct. It was a pretty good racket though. A person named “Jenny Mike” sent me an email saying that she is ready to pay the amount plus the extra shipping charges as well. She was to pay $220 but in that fake email from paypal it looked like she paid $270! Too good to be true! Then I was asked to ship the item as soon as possible for my account to be credited with this pending payment.
I checked my paypal and there was no pending payment on it. Then I googled and found this page! Thank goodness I did!
But this is so disappointing!! I thought I actually sold something for the first time! 🙁

I was almost fooled by a “buyer” wanting me to ship my iPhone to his nephew, but no money was put inti my accnt. And it needed a “tracking” number before payment gets sent. Needless to say I didn’t ship it. Then they asked for money back I didn’t have. Lol idiots!

My spouse and I definitely think that this short article was highly beautiful. I’m certain that the following quote will get your interest. – “I don’t think necessity is the mother of invention – invention, in my opinion, arises directly from idleness, possibly also from laziness. To save oneself trouble.” ~ Agatha Christie (1890 – 1976), An Autobiography, 1977

I just did this! Well….I just had someone buy my phone on EBay. I called customer support and they said even if they did put money in your PayPal account, its from a fraudulent account.

    Thank goodness I didn’t ship!

Hm I’m having a hard case here.
The emails I got seem more sophisticated, as they included a phone number.
On the other hand, same story of UK buyer wanting me to ship it to Nigeria.
Before they gave me the address I had to send it too, I already gave my e-mail address I use for my paypal account. Is there any way they can use this in a malicious way without my password?

  30. Rach

Seems like they’ve got a bit smarter recently. I’m selling my phone and got an email that looks just like the ones from PayPal, but it was from ‘paypallinknotification@ultimateemail.com’, telling me I have funds, followed by
‘David Walter just sent you money with PayPal.

David Walter is a Verified buyer.’

The address to ship to was:

    Salami Taofeek
No 5 nawairudeen road oke ijeun
    Abeokuta
    Ogun state
    110001
    Nigeria.

Not even 10 minutes after I found out it was a scam, I got another offer above the odds, asking for the item to be sent to:

    Richard Obi
    1, Razaq Balogun Street
    Surulere
    Lagos
    Nigeria.

Currently dealing with another person who is offering above the odds, what’s the betting they’ll be nigerian too? ahhhhh stress.

  31. MOHMMED

He said he’ll pay through paypal asap. Once I got all the messages from service@paypal I realized something is wrong. I googled it and found your post…

  33. Matt

I just got scammed as well 🙁 It was similar to those that people above have posted yet mine said to ship to Malaysia.

I’m from Brazil and I was selling my PSP on MercadoLivre
(Brazil’s Ebay) and some guy said: “I am interested in buying this product as a gift for my son that is studying in Africa and I want you to send it directly to him through DHL. I will pay you through bank transfer. I will pay the shipping to Africa, so reply directly to me, so that we can close the deal immediately.” I thought it was weird a person ask me in English if here in Brazil we speak Portuguese and because the Account was created only a day ago and this was the first deal he was trying to make… So I googled the same thing that this guy asked me and this and other websites we’re saying that it was a Scam… Thank you so much Google!!!

  42. Roxie

I had a simular thing to this its soo annoying!!! Is there nothing we can do or someone we can contact to catch these frauds,
i posted an advert on gumtree website selling a nokia phone and someone under the name of ‘Louise Mcintyre’ asked me about buying it, the first email they sent just read, ‘still for sale?’ i replied saying that my item was still for sale and they emailed the next day to say this big essay about how they were moving so i could not send the item to them in the US but if i could send it to there ‘friend’ in Nigeria they would cover my postage and phone amount of £80, it was way over priced so i did say that they did not need to pay that much postage, but before they replied i recived FAKE emails from a suposed bank of america saying that the funds had been entered into my bank and would be deposited as soon as i sent them the shipping number and tracking number from the postoffice, i have dealt with frauds before so i was reluctant, so i typed in on google, ‘nigerian scam’ and saw your page, if i had not seen i think i would have been naive enough to post the item because it was so believable, it was only untill after i starting noticing spelling mistakes, and how fake it really looked, and it made me laugh cos your email was so simular to the one i got, infact they even put at the end ‘i hope to read from you soon’ it makes me so angry that people try and do this to genuine sellers like us, luckily i did not send my item, i was stupid ebough to give them my bank details but i dont think there is alot they can do with them, do you think there is ? My bank did say they cant take money out or empty my account or internet banking, Is there nothing we can do to try and stop these bastards ?

  43. Anna

I almost got scammed. They say if something seems to good to be true, it probably is. ALWAYS go with your gut feeling! The manager at my post office saved me $400.00!! Also thanks to you guys and paypal customer service rep. My story is similar to everyone elses. I listed an item on ebay, PS3 to be exact. Not even an HOUR after I listed it, i received an email from a Tyler Perrie. 1st it through me off because he was offering way more than what i was asking for, saying he would cover the shipping and insurance. Of course i agreed and he sent an “instant payment” to me. The fake paypal sent me a email within 10 minutes. It said paypal Europe at the bottom and that kind of made me wonder b/c i’ve never heard of it. They were rushing me and said if i didnt sent the shipping info within 12 hours that i would face legal actions. Anyway, to make a long story short, i didn’t send my playstation and thank GOD for google and websites like these. Look out for Tyler Perry (tylerperrie001@yahoo.com)

I like this comment!! ——— This should be one of the rules in their terms of service agreement, “Thou shalt not buy, sell or correspond with anyone, anything or anybody that has anything to do with Nigeria”.

Tried us too and I also thank my Lord & Savior for leading me to this site! Here is what my letters sounded like….
