It’s easy to focus on the $6 billion money train that is the eBay “digital marketplace” (or auction site in everyday language – “Internet Marketers, Are you on the eBay Money Train Yet?” But if you’re not careful, you could fall prey to scam artists.
With a worldwide audience, that set of Pez dispensers could evoke a fierce bidding war between collectors in Belgium and Thailand, and the tussle could boost your sale price quite substantially. But again, beware the sharks out there.
Last week, I put up a cell phone for auction on eBay and within 4 hours, a buyer took up the “Buy It Now” option, purchasing the phone at the price I specified. This certainly was a bright prospect for my eBay plans. What’s more I got a PayPal payment notification from the UK buyer, along with an email that read:
Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included
an estimated cost of shipping to Nigeria for my son
company. Please let me know when you get a
notification from ebay that Slong Girl sent you a
payment. Send me the tracking number via auspost as
soon as you ship the item. I am having difficulties
getting across to my son that manage her father
company over there. I gave his address to paypal for
verification and it has been confirmed so it should be
in the payment notification.
His correct mailing address again is:

A UK buyer asking for a cell phone to be sent to Nigeria?
Plus the PayPal “payment notification” looked dubious. The payment amounts were all wrong and it came from “Services@Paypal.com” instead of the regular “service@paypal.com” (a hallmark of scam artists = poor spelling).
Even better, the email was sent from: “pp.notification.status@post.com” and “pp.notification1@gmail.com” – pretty poor email spoofing if you ask me.
–
As if these weren’t bad enough, the “bidder” had the audacity to send more fake email:
Dear andrew wee,
We hereby notify you of the transaction that was effected by Slong Girl for the
payment of the item(s) purchased from you on eBayand provide guidelines on how your funds
would be released.
A notification of this transaction on PayPal as been sent to you immediately the payment
was effected, and we are yet to read from you. Please be informed that the money has
been deducted from Slong Girl account and is pending on PayPal database.
This money will be released into your account as soon as the tracking number for the shipment
has been sent to us at pp.notification.status@mail.com for verification. You are adviced
to ship this item and send the tracking number you recieve from the post office to us at the
above email address.
We will send you an email as soon as the funds has been released into your account, until then
we wait for the tracking number for the shipment. Ship the Item to the address included in the
email used to you notify you of the payment for your item(s) ONLY!
Thank you using PayPal.

So the scam works in this way:
- They do a bait and switch on you: A US or UK eBay buyer will request for the item to be sent to Nigeria.
- They’ll mail you saying the payment is “held” pending shipment of the item and for you to send them the tracking number.
- If you fall for this, you’ll ship the item.
- They’ll disappear.
If you’re unsure, mail eBay’s customer service and get assistance.
Other telltale scam artist signs:
- The account was created a few hours or a few days ago
- Yours is the first item they have bought (they seem to like cell phones, PDAs and small electronic equipment they can presumably offload into the black market easily)
Checking the eBay site a day later, I found the person’s account had been suspended.
They are persistant though, here’s a followup email I received:
Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included
an estimated cost of shipping to Nigeria for my son
company. Please let me know when you get a

If you’re newer to eBay, do realize that the protocol is to receive payments BEFORE you ship items to the buyer.
PayPal provides some level of consumer protection for buyers, but you need to be savvy if you’re a seller.

Update: A buddy who is an eBay powerseller recommends listing items at the Bidz marketplace (which has some similarities to eBay – take note, it’s primarily focused on jewellery auctions).
If you’re interested in checking it out:
- Bidz US and Canada
- Bidz Australia and New Zealand
- Bidz Latin America (Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Mexico)
- Bidz Spain
- Bidz Middle East (Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates)
Scums of the earth. I’m embarrassed they almost fooled me. I only sell to Americans sorry.
Someone from facebook tried to buy my phone which I posted up on facebook marketplace. It was a nurse from the US, but after the price of the phone had been negotiated, she said ship it to West Africa and via registered mail.
Here is the shipping Address…
Name…Richard Johnson
Address…No11 Salami Bashorun Street Ijeshatedo
City…Surulere
State…Lagos
Country…Nigeria
Postal code…23401
I was asked to take down the ad after that. Looks like it’s a scam. I would never ship anything out until the money was in my bank. I guess I can post my phone up for sale again.

How wonderful they are.
definitely. anything from nigeria. don’t trust! my brother just got scammed this morning. i told him to forget it. the way they scammed you is still exactly the same.
my brother just got the same scam. he doesn’t speak enough english to understand the nigerian who tried to scam him. so he asked me about it. the tactic is essentially the same. they asked you to ship the stuff to russia for her daughter despite the person claimed to be from UK. my brother was too naive to believe the person. he shipped the item with express DHL from hong kong!
the person even called him. claiming the bank requires the airway bill to approve payment. claiming the payment was through which in fact it was not (my brother’s fault for not checking the payment), the person called and conjured up a story that the bank won’t approve such a small international transfer, so he would transfer extra USD400 on top of the payment and ask my brother to send the USD400 to nigeria to his daughter.
if his wife didn’t tell me about this since they didn’t understand the english too well. they might have sent USD + shipping and goods. they already sent the shipment. i guess they would get that back and lost the shipping fee. a price to pay for the mistake.
As soon as i see nigeria in the correspondance, i know it must be a scam. so yeah don’t trust them. these nigerians give their countrymen a bad rep. although i can’t say i met any nigerians in my university so far would give me a good impression either despite their churchgoing habits.
Everytime I receive one of these fraud attempts to rip me off. I mail them something junk such as a toy phone when I was selling a cell phone. I declare the value $400 (Max value for the cheaper shipping price) so they have to pay import duties on their new toy or piece of junk! It cost me $13.25 to mail usps flat rate international, but is worth every penny when they send a nasty email back. Last time I did it, I cost the fraud $80 in duty tax for a toy phone I paid $1 at the dollar store and include a picture of me laughing and flipping them off or mooning them!
Please do not send your PSP off to this person. This is an absolute scam. I very nearly sent my blackberry to an address in Nigeria. It’s total Fraud. X
My son has had this done to him . not rite. he didn’t send it thank god for this site. November 27.2011

i got scammed in October. i have all the emails still. i cant believe it happened to me but now that i look at it i should have noticed the scam. weird email’s. have never used paypal before so i wasn’t really sure about the process. i think they should list the process of buying and selling before you create your account. and maybe a questionnaire you must pass on it before they give you one. unfortunately if u do get scammed paypal wont do anything for you.
that is awesome. i would love to see this happen to the person who actually succeeded in ripping me off.
are you fucking kidding me. what really sucks is people from im guessing your country getting away with scamming ppl. pay for what u want asshole. nobody gets far in life from robbing people who did earn the money to purchase what there selling. btw they werent talking about asking the government there for money they were asking if the government can throw these pricks in jail for fraud!!!!!!
i have an address and a phone number:
“coal bath”

same thing just happend to me. i had even mentioned the reason for the sale of my laptop was for my daughters first xmas present. how heartless are these nigerians.
Wow, when this was happening I got an email with the content mentioned, but I just ignored it. It pays off to careful!

Yeah pretty much if you ever get someone requesting you to mail an item to Nigeria, of all places, it’s a scam!
Also if they state that the item is for someone else and mention that it’s “urgent”, it’s a scam.
I English, spelling and grammar are bad, combined with the above mentioned, its DEFINITELY A SCAM.
lmao idiots.
This same person try to buy from my wife as well. Please kindly ask Facebook market to stop this fake scam.
I am sorry to say but all good spirited nigerians are dead I have never in my life come across one before. I need a strong proof to believe what you are saying. I still wouldn’t believe it it could be a scam.
I am a Nigerian (in the UK). I won’t even try to pretend I can convince everyone (or anyone for that matter ) on this forum that not all of us are like that.
But you must believe me, there are lots of good well meaning ones out there. It is the same scum of the earth ones who keep carrying out these fraudulent activities. When I was in the uni, I got scammed and sent my phone to some dubious buyer back home in my own country. On top of that, I ended up with a bill from the courier company for £90. At the time, I was leaving in a share flat and needed the money for other stuff. Since then, I NEVER EVER EVER send anything to Nigeria. My own country. I am a highly rated power seller on eBay and have never resorted to scamming buyers. NIGERIA is permanently barred from my auctions.
My best advise is NEVER to send anything to Nigeria. If you have to, then watch out for these and run if you spot any of them:
1. Very poor English
2. Email in HTML code rather than normal one
3. Item being requested to be sent to an address other than the one belonging to the buyer (usually to purported uncles, brothers, etc in Nigeria).
4. If there is need for urgency and this is persistently stressed.
5. Addresses in shomolu, bariga, ajegunle, oshodi and a host of others (these are some if the most run down, poorest areas in Lagos, Nigeria.
6. Sometimes, they will email you a bar code or some other courier documents. Ignore it.
7. If they request that you receive payment via western union (even though you ave said that you only accept PayPal). NEVER EVER accept or send money via this means. It is almost untraceable and irreversible (unlike PayPal).
8. ALWAYS check your PayPal to confirm money has been put in it. Do not rely on links sent to you as they are usually phishing mails created by the scammers and cloaked as ‘PayPal’. PayPal will not ask you to click on any link. You can actually send the email to PayPal to verify it, though careful inspection will point out several errors.
9. Sometimes, they tell you takes that are meant to make you feel sorry for them (sob stories).
10. They offer you payment far in excess of what the item costs. Who in their right mind will offer you £400 for a £90 phone??
Finally, like I said before, there are decent hardworking NIGERIANS. But there are rotten, creepy unscrupulous ones who will scam you at the first opportunity. It is usually the same set of people using several identities who carry out the same act over and over again till they get lucky. Nigeria is made up of nearly 160 million citizens of which about a few thousand get involved in these scams. Just very unfortunate.
Hi!I just viewed your listed item, and am very much interested in buying, would you accept £221 including shipping charges?
Have sent the payment and help me to end the listing on eBay. I added the shipping charges also, kindly check PayPal and your PayPal email for notification and confirmation.shipping will be through Royal Mail,Signed For, which will cost you £12.

thanks to the person who created this site, not very familiar with this internet selling yet and the guy tried to pull the same thing with me on gum tree. after typing the Nigeria address on Google to check it this site came up and saved me. THANK YOU!
It is in reality a great and useful piece of info. I’m satisfied that you just shared this helpful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.
almost fell for these scammers.posted a phone for sale on local bidding site free shipping. a guy claimed his wife is from the UNITED NATIONS and he is willing to shoulder even the shipping fee.gave me his details. then thank god i googled it first.since i felt funny about the deal and he asked me to give him my paypal details.
Thanks for your write-up on the vacation industry. I’d personally also like to add that if you’re a senior taking into consideration traveling, it is absolutely imperative that you buy travel cover for retirees. When traveling, elderly people are at high risk of having a healthcare emergency. Having the right insurance plan package to your age group can look after your health and provide peace of mind.
I’m really sorry and at d same time so sad about all these internet/ebay scams by Nigerians because I’m also a Nigerian. But for everyone who has been scammed, isn’t there a way ebay and the shipping companies can help in tracking these criminals in Nigeria? You have their details, which are the receiver’s name, address and telephone number. The truth is that some people will have to receive the goods once they are delivered to the given addresses. Those people should be the prime suspects because they will definitely have a link or relationship with the criminals.
I’m so positive that the Nigerian police and EFCC (Economic & Financial Crime Commission) will be of great help because even the Nigeria Government is committed to bringing criminals like this, who tarnish the good image of our great country, to book.
One man said that he lives in UK and his daughter needs my ipod to be delivered to nigeria. He says he will send the payment first, so is he scammer?
Am Nigeria, born in the uk always lived in the uk, am sorry to say any nigerian, that isn’t in UK is a scammer I love ebay, that’s where I shop when am so broke, I have never scammed anyone before, until 2 idiotic nigerians tried to scam me, was my first time selling a i phone 4s, after christmas and this person offered £600 I was happy, so I stupidly gave them my paypal account and I received spoof messages, bearing in mind am a teenager, whose clever than them, and a computer brainier at that I was able to unmask the email address only to discover its fake, then the other buy claimed to be from the uk, her ebay address showed that, but wants me to ship to nigerian, and last night fed my inbox with 30 fake ebay and paypal messages even threatening me. Be careful, am ashamed to be nigerian, even though I am only half, they all need to die, and be destroyed scammers, thieves, loser, and bums. Be careful
ALWAYS WAIT TO SEE THE PAYMENT IN YOUR ACCOUNT WITH YOUR OWN EYES BEFORE POSTING, WHETHER THEY SAY IT’S DONE OR NOT, WHETHER YOU GET EMAILS SAYING IT HAS OR NOT, WHETHER THEY SOUND NICE AND HONEST OR NOT. i just had to chase my item because i posted it before reading this page. too much time energy and trust gone in one day for my liking.
the same thing happend to me about a year ago i was selling my psp on ebay and he offerd me 180 euro for it. he wanted me to send the psp to nigeria . he said it was for his cousins birrthday and he was relying on me to get it there. after i sent it he asked me for the trackin number but i never sent it so i thought he might have sent me another message but he had go rid of his account.
i hope they catch him.
Activity is one more topic we enjoy to stay connected to. After all this is the only distraction we can let ourselves in this fast paced existence. For us, Cricket news does much more than a work of enjoyment. We may possibly get crazed about but being Indians we are authorized such trend. We are a cricket mad place and that suits our temperament. Thanks to Net, existence is created surely facilitating our enjoyable and need to have jointly.
That sounds all too familiair. While selling my PSP on eBay I noticed someone bought it. The person claimed he was from America but was working overseas. He wanted to buy this item as a birthday present for his daughter.
The first e-mail made me wonder already, and here’s a copy paste:
“Hello Seller Am the person who Bought your item on eBay My Name is Osvaldo Okafro i live in CA as for now i am not in the State am out for a Building Contract am buying this item as a B/D Gift for my Daughter who is Schoolling in West Africa Never Mind the shipping FEE. i will be adding $60 for the shipping Cost to West Africa Through u can contact me on my mail(osvaldookafro@yahoo.com) THANKS will like to hear from u soon. ”
After I replied with and sent him the invoice he asked for my Paypal information for “fast payment”. I explicitely told him that I only sent and receive payments through the eBay system itself.
What I also noticed was the fact that this person still called me “Seller”, which I found odd.
Because he stated earlier that the package should be send to another location I asked him for this address since I like to prepare labels before hand and such. Took a while but I received the address. I was given the following address:
Name…………………………KELECHI OKAFRO
Address………………………16 UNITY ROAD
City……………………………IKEJA
Zip code……………………..23401
State…………………………..LAGOS
Country……………………….NIGERIA
In combination with the fact that he wanted to pay outside of eBay I did a quick Google on the name and found this site, and ofcourse this subject.
So yes, here I am, giving everyone that’s active on eBay, the heads up about this person and that he/she is still trying to scam people. I wish it was easier for people to report scammers on eBay. I tried to report this person through the contact form but the account name consisted of numbers and it said “Object not found”. I would actually love to see a button on a user’s profile which just says “Report Abuse” or something.
Small tip of advice for everyone though, only do payments through eBay itself and never outside of it, no matter how nice someone may seem! And ofcourse, never ship unless the money is in your Paypal account. eBay is a great platform but sadly there are people trying to abuse it.
I think we can conclude from this page that (almost) all ‘buyers’ from Nigeria are scammers. It’s dangerous, because if you are not alert, you get scammed by those ‘buyers’. And they are everywhere, even on Dutch sites (Marktplaats.nl as an example). I got almost scammed on that site. Because of the very poor English the scammer used, I thought it was a scammer and I was right. Luckely I looked at this page and I realised I had to deal with a scammer. After I send a mail with: I think you are a scammer so I don’t send this package to you, I never heard anymore from that ‘buyer’. So watch out, don’t take risks.
hi, thanks God i wrote this this forum before sending my item to nigeria. 3 days before i put my samsung glaxy on ebay and he bought my mobile in 3 minutes. i was very happy to see this. but i was little bit confuse to see this. he sent me 400 euro and said send this item to my son in nigeria. i was trying my best to know how can i send it to nigeria lolzzz.
i am a very new user on ebay. it was my first deal. but plz tell me one thing i received a paypal email and 1 ebay email that you order is conformed and he send 400 euro give us shipment number.
and on ebay he marked that he sent payment to me. how he can do this if he did not payed yet plz tell me.
The Nigerians tried to scam me today. Someone bought my iPhone at the last second on ebay. The address was in North Carolina, at first. Also the ebay account was brand new, but okay I could deal with that. I told him I was new to ebay, so he was probably thinking “Jackpot!” However I had enough sense to tell him that I wouldn’t ship the iPhone until I received the payment through paypal. Then, he sends me an email back with some convoluted story about how the phone is for his cousin who is doing health research and the shipping address changed from NC to Nigeria! The email had horrible grammar and just reeked bs. I told him I wasn’t shipping to Nigeria, I’ll only ship to his address in NC, otherwise we’ll cancel the transaction. He replies with this:
Ok, so sorry the problem then.I don’t want to waste the bid that is why i ask for your help.but now i hope you will understand my problem so you can cancel the bid.
Thanks
What does that even mean? If they’re trying to scam us, you’d think they would learn how to speak our language. Anyway, I just wanted to share because I enjoyed reading how other peoples’ experiences were so similar to mine. These scammers all follow the same play book.
I enjoying getting scam emails and can spot them a mile away. I usually spend lots of time chatting with the people.. here is a sample:
First email after i posted an xbox and games for sale on Craigslist:
Is your item still for sale?
Please get back to me.
Mariam
My response:
Yes
Scammers Response:
Thanks for you reply,i am located in Kansas,i really need to buy this
and send to my cousin schooling outside the state as a Gift to him,i havebeen trying to buy this on eBay but is very stressful buying on eBay andi will not want to miss out on this opportunity so am making you an offerof $300 to rap the sale off.I will be paying through PAYPAL because i havea verified account with PayPal.So kindly get back with your PayPal emailaddress so i can make payment into your PayPal account.Once paymentclears, shipment will be handled by me through my personal FedEx account,so you don’t have to pay for shipment.Get back to me if my approval is granted. I would like to see the pictures please.
Thanks
My response (At this point i’m like YAY!! I got a scammer):
Hey Mariam,
Ok sounds good. It would be great to help your cousin out and i would be willing to ship anywhere for you since you sound nice and are presenting this item to your cousin as a gift. Thats really thoughtful and it’s good know there are kind people in this world like yourself. I would donate this to my cousin but sadly i have no family. Just me. Anyways my account in tom***@yahoo.com for paypal. i’ll remove the post from craigslist and hold it for you.
P.S. I love Kansas and grew up there as a kid. Wonderful state.
Scammers response:
i will make the payment now and get back to yu
My Response:
Ok take your time.
Scammers response:
Hi,
I have just made out the payment online now. Go and check the mail youused in opening your paypal account I believe the confirmation mail must have been sent there check the inbox trash or the spam message you should be able to see it there…….. I wanna
let you know that i am having some little problems with my fedex
account as i checked it online now and i was asked to reactivate it so
i cant do that now as i have to sort one or two thing out with them.
So i am sorry as i wont be handling shipment through my fedex accountagain. So, pls get the postage cost to the following address via post office (USPS EXPRESS MAIL) and ship out the item via post office(USPS) asap cos i have told Ryan to be expecting it. I have also included $100 extra for the shipping.i think that should be
enough for you to ship.
Name: Ryan Coker
Address: No 75 Ijeja Road,
City: Abeokuta
State: Ogun State
Postal Code: 23439
Country: Nigeria
Let me know how much it costs you to ship. After you ship get back to
me with the amount you used in shipping. I am really sorry for the
inconveniences. Please get back to me asap.
My Response (At this point i received a bunch of fake paypal emails, etc. etc.) :
thank you Mariam. I appreciate the help you have provided me. I will work out the shipping details on my end as i am very familiar with shipping overseas as my ex-wife was stationed overseas for some time before she was killed in the war. It’s been sometime now, but the memory of her is still with me. Anyways I should be able to get this out in the next couple of days. it takes me a little more time because i am in a wheelchair after a car accident a few years ago. either way i feel better sending this to your cousin then selling it locally. So if it takes me more time to send this out i know it will be worth is to know the smile on your cousins face. I will send the tracking numbers to the email address that were sent and include you on the emails. thank you again mariam.
Tom
Scammers Response:
thanks you so much and im sorry about your wife incident,i have told
my cousin that is going to received it soon
My Response:
No thank you Mariam for providing me with the money so i can use it toward medicine that I need to buy since my accident. As you know that gets very expensive. Since my son passed away there is no need for the Xbox anymore, but the money will go to a good cause, my health. Sorry to come off sounding so sad. Really i should be happy to have found someone like you. I’m actually thinking about moving back to Kansas since living in California is so expensive. I grew up in Belle Plaine, KS. It’s south of Wichita and it just a lovely place. Where in Kansas do you live? I really miss that state and do i hope i get back there. Anyways once my caretaker has free time he’ll take me to the post office to send the package. I might not be able to sent it until this Weekend. Maybe on Saturday. Is that ok with you? I can try to get it out sooner by asking my neighbor to help me. My neighbor is a kind person like you and can help out if need be. Let me know your thoughts as your cousin is going to be very excited about this gaming system and i really want to send it to him as soon as i can.
Tom
Scammers response:
Alright im okay with that
Thanks
In closing:
I’ll stop here..but you get the point. Look at these little emails as little balls of joy for you to play with. 🙂 the conversations go on and on and eventually i make them talk more even though they dont want to, but it’s fun to see them try to cover their tracks on things. These can go on for weeks with all types of excuses from my side. So get out there an have some fun people and stop sending your electronics to Nigeria AND pay for the shipping. 🙂
last thing.. if you are really bored just post an item for sale far greater than the actual value and the scammers come running. Trust me.. Geez i should write a book on this. ok i’m out. enjoy
you can avoid from these like buyer and save your time. every time on ebay when you post any item in shipment do not select take from home select only shipment in your country. then ebay will not let then to bid or buy you item from an other country.
my english is not too good so plz try to understand.thanks
Oh my. the same thing happened to me. Luckily I found this site!
Well guess what its still going on. I listed a expensive Canon lens a low and behold , I got the same rap. Lucky for me I had some similar experence on Craigs list and did some reasearch. When I sent requested photos of the lens from my personal email the bull shit got deeper and deeper. All of a sudden the shipping address changed from Poland to His son in nigeria, This morning I am still getting e-mail from him and spoof paypal , will release funds after I get conformation of shipped item, please send today for my son is in need for his work in nigeria. Be carefull out there..

Let me know how much it costs you to ship. After you ship get back to
me with the amount you used to ship. .I am really sorry for the
inconveniences.
Obviously, you sir, are a scammer.
It’s so embarrassing that Nigeria is a no-man’s land because of criminals like you. Why are you defending criminals?
Please if you have been scammed, or are in the process of being scammed by low-life like the young gentleman above, simply forward the details of such scammers to “info [at] efccnigeria.org”, and make sure the address of the scammer is listed.
Believe me, the fear of EFCC is the beginning of wisdom in Nigeria.
Even if the scam was carried out 7 years ago, you can still make the report via the website.
At least make sure that these criminals go to jail.
And yes, I’m a Nigerian.
