It’s easy to focus on the $6 billion money train that is the eBay “digital marketplace” (or auction site in everyday language – “Internet Marketers, Are you on the eBay Money Train Yet?” But if you’re not careful, you could fall prey to scam artists.
With a worldwide audience, that set of Pez dispensers could evoke a fierce bidding war between collectors in Belgium and Thailand, and the tussle could boost your sale price quite substantially. But again, beware the sharks out there.
Last week, I put up a cell phone for auction on eBay and within 4 hours, a buyer took up the “Buy It Now” option, purchasing the phone at the price I specified. This certainly was a bright prospect for my eBay plans. What’s more I got a PayPal payment notification from the UK buyer, along with an email that read:
Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included
an estimated cost of shipping to Nigeria for my son
company. Please let me know when you get a
notification from ebay that Slong Girl sent you a
payment. Send me the tracking number via auspost as
soon as you ship the item. I am having difficulties
getting across to my son that manage her father
company over there. I gave his address to paypal for
verification and it has been confirmed so it should be
in the payment notification.
His correct mailing address again is:
Atolagbe Agbede
03 Ijaiye Road
Opp Mobil Filling Station

Thanks and I hope to read from you as soon as possible
cos I want this to get to him at the shortest period
of time.

A UK buyer asking for a cell phone to be sent to Nigeria?
Plus the PayPal “payment notification” looked dubious. The payment amounts were all wrong and it came from “Services@Paypal.com” instead of the regular “service@paypal.com” (a hallmark of scam artists = poor spelling).
Even better, the email was sent from: “pp.notification.status@post.com” and “pp.notification1@gmail.com” – pretty poor email spoofing if you ask me.
–
As if these weren’t bad enough, the “bidder” had the audacity to send more fake email:
Dear andrew wee,
We hereby notify you of the transaction that was effected by Slong Girl for the
payment of the item(s) purchased from you on eBayand provide guidelines on how your funds
would be released.
A notification of this transaction on PayPal as been sent to you immediately the payment
was effected, and we are yet to read from you. Please be informed that the money has
been deducted from Slong Girl account and is pending on PayPal database.
This money will be released into your account as soon as the tracking number for the shipment
has been sent to us at pp.notification.status@mail.com for verification. You are adviced
to ship this item and send the tracking number you recieve from the post office to us at the
above email address.
We will send you an email as soon as the funds has been released into your account, until then
we wait for the tracking number for the shipment. Ship the Item to the address included in the
email used to you notify you of the payment for your item(s) ONLY!
Thank you using PayPal.

This was sent from the same mail.com and gmail.com emails.

So the scam works in this way:
- They do a bait and switch on you: A US or UK eBay buyer will request for the item to be sent to Nigeria.
- They’ll mail you saying the payment is “held” pending shipment of the item and for you to send them the tracking number.
- If you fall for this, you’ll ship the item.
- They’ll disappear.
If you’re unsure, mail eBay’s customer service and get assistance.
Other telltale scam artist signs:
- The account was created a few hours or a few days ago
- Yours is the first item they have bought (they seem to like cell phones, PDAs and small electronic equipment they can presumably offload into the black market easily)
Checking the eBay site a day later, I found the person’s account had been suspended.
They are persistant though, here’s a followup email I received:
Hello,
I just sent the payment for the item. I also included

company. Please let me know when you get a

If you’re newer to eBay, do realize that the protocol is to receive payments BEFORE you ship items to the buyer.
PayPal provides some level of consumer protection for buyers, but you need to be savvy if you’re a seller.

Update: A buddy who is an eBay powerseller recommends listing items at the Bidz marketplace (which has some similarities to eBay – take note, it’s primarily focused on jewellery auctions).
If you’re interested in checking it out:
- Bidz US and Canada
- Bidz Australia and New Zealand
- Bidz Latin America (Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Mexico)
- Bidz Spain
- Bidz Middle East (Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates)

Same thing happen to me! A beautiful pageant dress. Now I have no money and no dress. What else can we do? Ebay and paypal said to contact our police department.
I’m new to ebay, never bought or sold anything yet. I tried to sell my iphone and within 20 minutes of posting it the buyer bought it outright for a sum that was honestly greater than I expected anyone would be willing to pay. Their address was listed as Ohio, which is local enough and didn’t bother me (I had specifically ruled out anyplace that wasn’t in North America as places I WOULD NOT ship to), but then I received an email that was allegedly from paypal/ebay (and looked legit) saying they’d paid me an extra $50 more than I asked and had this to say:
“Hello Seller,
It is my pleasure to inform you that I have carried out the payment of via PayPal. I want it sent to my daughter who is living and working in West africa for her Birthday Gift.I would have asked you to post it to my eBay address. But I am presently on a business trip to Russian, here is the delivering address of my
daughter.

I want you to ship the item Today monring to Lagos Nigeria via USPS first class SIGNED-FOR so that the item will get there ASAP,and Please get back to me ASAP with the shipping tracking number of the item shipped.NOTE: Please wrap the item carefully, write GIFT on the paper. Please don’t use any other postage service except USPS local post SERVICE DELIVERY.I’m very sorry for the inconvenience
I may cause you Thanks.”
I also noticed that along with broken English and confusing directions, these scammers often first ask more about the “condition” of the item right after they purchase it. Maybe they think it gives an extra touch to the reality of their request, though because I had provided more than adequate information regarding the condition in my listing, I was baffled at the request.
Regardless, this new demand that I mail it to Nigeria “ASAP” got me curious so I’m lucky to have found this site… It made me take a closer look at the payment confirmation email and discover it was fraudulent.
dats what we call white minds brain verses black minds heart. u guys(whites) re bunch of scammers, coming to Africa to collect our oil in return give shit, so don’t be fucking complaining about the scams being done to u because u guys deserve it….am out of here
paypals payment method make it very easy for these scammers to operate on ebay.simply because they can buy an item without actually buying it,and then try to con you into sending it to them.
having to use paypal on ebay is very annoying for this reason.
amazon have alot less of this scamming because of the way you pay for things on there.ie unless the moneys in the buyers credit/bank account they cant buy anything.but occasionally you will recieve an email from someone wanting to buy something without having to go through the normal process on amazon.
I’m sick of these cunts. All they do is waste genuine Ebayers time. I’ve been trying to sell my iPhone through Ebay but to no awail. Now re-advertised for the 3rd time in less than 2 weeks, and all I’m getting is these bottom-feeding parasites. Ebay has become infested with them. I have to file disputes each time with Ebay. Goddam waste of time.
Sorry but there is no way to get it back it’s actually very easy to spoof An email the only way to check if it’s scam is to copy the ip address and look it up in the Internet
Nigerians are the only ppl scam like like Kids an easy way to convince yourself it’s q scan is I’f you find that the mail is not formally stuctured or if its like they are ordering you to make the first move.
This happened to me too, I received a 50 % payment first and was told I ll receive other half.after shipping
And I sent him only the box with the booklet. And told him he’ll receive the other half after I receive my full payment
And that was the last I heard from him
Fuck Nigerians – every goddamn Craigslist or EBay item I try to sell these cocksuckers come round with their bulshit loop holed roller coaster way of shipping and payment and two or three or four individuals with different names are involved with US phone numbers, who in the US would buy a cell phone and ship it to their daughter in Nigeria???? She, Janet Brus agreed on buying 20 BAGS!!! Email From Janet(scammer) :
So i will like you to proceed the shipment with SINGPOST REGISTER MAIL (register) and as soon as the shipment as been done i will like you to get me notify by sending me the tracking number so all you have to do is to reply directly to the original payment notification the bank sent to you as at the time i deposited funds to your account, you include the proof of postage, something like the shipment tracking number or the postage receipt and i would also appreciate it if you email me the tracking number.
Replied By me(Still Stupidly Believeing Her) :
Hi Janet,
Sorry for the late respond. i’ve received an email from the Bank Of America. I do understand that the payment will only be cleared once after i sent the shipment and that is,
I’m the one that has to make the full payment of the Bags first, i’ve to wait for the shipment to reach to me first by then only i’m able to shipped it out to your address given. By THEN
only the payment from the BANK will be cleared,- which is quite TEDIOUS/TROUBLESOME for my side. As I have mentioned earlier, that payment has to reach to me first, once i received the money, then only
I’ll make the payment to my supplier directly and wait for their shipment FROM KOREA( which may take 5 to 8 working days ) and Shipped to you. I’m Really caught up.
And the America Bank need me to produce the shipping documents by 48hours which is impossible for me to do so as the stock itself will reach to me LATER on after i made a FULL payment to them.
Janet : Thanks for your honest I would want you to email them to refund me since you can not meet up.
Thanks for your honest.
Janet.
So after when i ask from the bank to refund her back, the bank demands a payment from me,if not they’ll freeze her account. Mrs Brus keep on begging me everyday, she say she got no money to eat.etc, sad stories and all.I SENT AN EMAIL TO THE BANK AND say i got no money, and they say they’ll report me to the police and Singapore police. i said go ahead for all i care!! Then they stop… 🙂
But after that they say if i can’t transfer 1k is fine but at least $300Singapore dollars…CRAZY OR WHAT!!
BLOODY SCAMMERS!!
Thank GOD I’M BROKE!! iwas about to help her. But thank god also I WASN’T SCAMMED!!!! THANK GOD!!

i’m not gonna be nice like the other Nigerians who made comments above.
First of all, I’ll like to say a big “Fuck U” to Joe n Anonymous. whoever the fuck they are.
I’m negatively affected by the ill that a few rogues from my country perpetrate bcos every online store I try to buy from has so much suspicion of anyone from Nigeria.
Whether you choose to believe it or not there are Nigerians who earn a honest living and who work hard for their daily bread. These people are more honest than you’ll ever be in your sorry life.
Accepted there are scammers in Nigeria and a whole lot of them too but you don’t put a whole nation and its people down bcos some of the people are rogues.
There’s over 160m Nigerians and i’m sure less than 0.1% of them are the rogues that make you label us all as thieves.
I’m not making excuses for the rogues but I’m a honest Nigerian, black n proud, i’m pretty sure i make more money in my line of biz than you’ll ever dream of making (honest quid) and if you don’t like that, go jump of a cliff.
And by the way, there are scammers everywhere including in your country.
Nigerians get scammed by you people too.
I sent some goods to a guy in Germany once and he was supposed to wire $2000 to my account but he never did.
The idiot told me he had been scammed by a Nigerian the year b4 and so he felt the right thing to do was become a criminal also.
He stole from me. He scammed me. I wasn’t even angry, instead i felt pity for him bcos his reasoning is so damn stupid (just like this Joe dude above).
I’m a Nigerian and I’m not gonna be nice in this post.
except for a few honest people who got unlucky, most of you guys got scammed bcos of ur GREED and STUPIDITY.
It looks like dog, walks like dog, barks like a dog. that shld tell u its a frigging dog.
don’t ship items that you have not received payment for. its that SIMPLE!!!
I can’t believe with all the stuff on d internet about scams and how not to fall prey, some stupid folks still go ahead and mail things to people they don’t know and who haven’t sent them money for d stuff being shipped.
And pls, stop all d noise about Nigerians been scammers, all of you guys complaining and acting all holy seem to conveniently forget the criminals in ur own countries and would rather pick on Nigerians bcos its fashionable to do so.
Idiots, I dare say.

WOW O.O i was looking for how to send a tracking number. I am in the same situation. i was about to sell a brand new ipod touch 64gb which is worth $420 and they paid in total $520 including the shipping. then out of no where this is what i got sent: I apologize for not contacting you immediately i won your auction item on eBay. I am very happy about the purchase . My daughter had to log on to my eBay account to view the purchase, she was also happy with it. But eBay had thought it was a third party due to their over zealousness. they decided to protect us both.
The issues with my account have now been resolved and confirmed by eBay.
I precisely purchased the item on behalf of a folk of mine in Nigeria who has been transferred to serve as a missionary in Nigeria.I will be leaving for New Zealand for a program I’m seeking your help in getting the item posted to him in Nigeria.
I have sorted out the postage costs on the Australia post website and i will be adding it accordingly to the costs of the item and i want the posted via Australia Seamail Or Airmail.
Here Is the postage address

Lol just happened for my MacBook. Thanks, although this email is different. Paypal is the name in my email and it’s some weird shit. I don’t trust these jungle monkeys enough to where I would go as far even sending a tooth pick.
If you wish for to get a good deal from this article then you have to apply these strategies to your won website.
Thank you for posting this site. I would have been cheated out of a laptop that I am trying to sell to pay bills. Info given to me:
Name: Daniel Peegan
Address: 7, Araromi Street, itire
City: Surulere
State: Lagos
Postal code: 23401
Country: Nigeria
At first I was greatful that someone was going to buy my laptop for a higher price but then I was crushed and yet thankful when I found this site. Thank you for your help and please be careful and safe.
I also received one from the US of A
It states that they want to get if for their son’s birthday gift. The son lives in Atlanta Georgia and they would love to pick it up but they work on a ship. And they want to pay via Paypal.
this explain why i will not buy fairly used Blackberry in Nigeria i rather save money and go for new one. b/cos most of fairly used blackberries in Nigeria are probably stolen from the original owner via scam. i don’t know when Nigerians will repeat from all these bad deeds its killing us little by little
Some Nigerians are con artist but we have con artist all over the world too.I have been duped by an online human hair merchant in America before.Isnt that scam?140usd.Any smart business man should device a way of protecting his business.for example,if you believe Some Nigerians are con artist, insist on bank wire for every payment from Nigeria and the scammers will never write you an email because you have beat them to their credit card and paypal scam.
If you read most of the mails, you will understand that only dumb Nigerians engage in scam and can only scam dumb people.I have always believed America has good scam control until I lost my 140usd(via visa) so now,I know it is a global problem but worse in some countries I agree. It bothers me though the Image those stupid, dumb and heartless idiots have created for my beautiful country. You out there, beware though.Do not purnish the innocent Nigerians because of the few dumb ones.Ask for upfront wire transfer payments and you will be suprised how many Nigerians are for real.
You will also block off the innocent ones.I am so disgusted with this dumb boys. You can help us fight this.Just package a toy phone,I will pay for shipping and trust me via bank wire to your account.Nigerian Efcc will grab the fool and I will keep you updated. There are very honest Nigerians who so want to get rid off the dumb idiots. If you all can do this from time to time, the story will go round and they will look for something else to do.I am a Nigerian living in Nigeria but you cannot imagine how many scam emails I get everyday but I just delete and not bother to read. This fraudsters are very few and trust me,they are very hard working at the wrong thing. They are so very disgusting.
I wish I would have researched and read these blogs earlier cause I just got scammed by a Nigerian. I sold a watch on ebay and the guy was from France and told me it’s a bday gift for his son who is UNICEF stationed in Nigeria. I shipped it and fowarded the tracking to paypal thinking this was all legit and I found out it was a scam. And to boot the guy emailed me personally telling me his paypal account was overdrawn by 250.00 and that I had to wire the money via Western Union to his son cause he is at sea as a oceanographer. I feel like a idiot, I thought I was doing a good thing and got kicked in the butt. My first time selling something as well. It’s ashame that there are no nice people out there anymore.
Can I just say THANK YOU for this post. I posted an Xbox on Craigslist and received a very similar email making a request for me to send the device to Nigeria. Not happening.
???????????? ?????? ?????? ??????
Thank you soooo much for this blog!! I was about to go to the post office to send my $1,000 camera to “a Marine in michigans son who is on an ‘ecological conference’ in Nigeria” I got a paypal payment pending but he insists that I send it immediately and must reply with the tracking number”. I told him I need the payment first for me to send it and he has made every excuse under the sun for why I need to send it first and insists that I should trust him. I wish I could so I could get my $1,000 but looks like it’s not happening this time.

So I was not to sure about shipping price so I started to look it up and I came across this page about scam and fraud in west africa I was like oh noooo so I want to my PayPal and I have a pending payment of $1,170. So I was like ok so maybe this one is not a scam but it did not feel right the story I’ve read sound the same like mines. so I decide to call PayPal And I gave them all the info I had and they said they do not see any payment in my account so I gave the the PayPal Payment Confirmation Transaction ID 5P078657CR748962S that did not come up but it did come up with another name so I told PayPal how come I can see the pending payment and you can’t just not to sure how they did that but lucky for me I never send any items out until payment is complete and I’m able to send it to my bank account. So I went ahead and contact the buyer and told them until the payment is clear that I was not going to send anything out they got back to me and said that, that money been taking out of there bank so please send it out tomorrow so your PayPal can clear that payment for you I did not come out my face to them cause I want them to be found and I did not want them to know that I know.
so please be careful out there and god bless everyone.
Hope this helps and look at that name Anna Gehrken
Hi James,
Have you ever been to Nigeria?
Hello.
I have heard so much about this online scam – most especially: ebay!
I wonder, I ponder!
why do people fall from the same scam routes all the time? Even rats in Africa no longer die from traps that killed them a couple of years ago let alone humans????!!!!!
please guys! you can head out to amazon to sell your stuffs. if it’d interest you to know, most of this cheap scams are no longer perpetrated by Nigerian scammers. i think they now make recourse to ‘unorthodox’ means to get bigger pay.
if you aren’t a greedy person, you won’t get scammed!
I usеԁ to be аble to find good infоrmation
from your blog posts.
I almost fell for this scam today! Thank god for this post/thread. I suggest checking the message source of the email – turns out the “grandpa from uk” had an IP address that originated from the US
