Take note if you’re blogging on the WordPress Platform, a cracker has introduced a security exploit into one of the WordPress 2.1.1 download servers at WordPress.org, which could potentially open security holes in your installation.
For the WordPress development team to label this as a “WordPress 2.1.1 Dangerous, Upgrade” hints at the severity of this.
WordPress upgrades can involve some pain, especially if your existing plugins may not be fully compatible with the new code.
As always:
- Backup your blog content (the most important step)
- Deactivate your plugins
- Do the installation
- Reactivate plugins
- Ensure that the blog is working as it should
- Do another data backup

If you actively use blogging for branding or income generation, take note of the WordPress upgrades available.
A number of prominent Internet Marketers WordPress 2.0.5 blogs had been hacked into, and the WordPress development team launched WordPress 2.0.7 to address the issue within a short timespan, even as they were about to launch their next major upgrade, the WordPress 2.1 series.
I’d been holding back on upgrading, even though test WordPress 2.1.1 installations showed that the blogs were running much faster, due to a major factor.
In this case, slower adopters stand to benefit, as a number of plugins have been shown to be not fully compatible with WordPress 2.1.
If you’re a WordPress blogger, you’d know that WordPress plugins are the lifeblood of any serious blogger. They add an unparalled degree of functionality and bring the WordPress platform to a whole new level, compared to other blogging platforms.
After reading that the new WordPress has difficulty playing nicely with my major Tag-related plugin, Tag Warrior, I’d held back till there seemed to be some stablity.
I’d finally launched into the new platform, wishing for the best.

I was shocked, dumbfounded and aghast when I saw this top Internet Marketer doing what seemed to be promotion of hardcore pornography, “sex enhancement” pills and gambling on their personal blog.
Had something happened?
I have been reading some of their emails, visiting their site regularly and have even bought a number of their products.
Had they moved to the “dark side”?

Bloggers take note, there’re 2 basic types of blogs:
- Branding blogs
- Monetization blogs
Branding blogs: Build either your personal brand or a product/service brand. An example of this could be high-end gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer’s blog or this blog which focuses on blogging, affiliate marketing and traffic generation.
On the other hand, you have “Monetization blogs” which are intended to generate income. The blogs can serve either as traffic generation tools to push visitors to a site, or sell products or services themselves. Product review blogs designed to close transactions fall into this category.
Monetization blogs also include blogs created solely to monetize Google’s Adsense contextual advertising program. Such blogs feature prominent locations for adsense advertising blocks, or other advertising networks like Yahoo Search Marketing or Adbrite’s ad blocks.

Newer Internet Marketers continue to be confounded, bewildered and frustrated by RSS.
Sure, everyone may know that it stands for “Really Simple Syndication”, or “Rich Site Summary”. Or if you go back to it’s earlier definition RDF Site Summary.
But what does it all mean?
And is it a new technology.
Again, like blogging, RSS traces it’s roots for a number of years. To 1999 in fact.
RSS is a way of accessing content from blogs and podcasts via a easy to use interface.
While RSS was used to broadcast content from personal blogs previously, increasingly businesses and online marketers are using RSS feeds as a means of generating brand awareness and to promote products and services too.
The bugbear with RSS however, lies in the fact that it requires some techy know how to set up successfully.
Microsoft has announced that the new Windows Vista incorporates RSS support.
Given that I will be holding back on a Vista upgrade for some time (and I suspect others will also), here’re some intermediate solutions.
My preference is to install the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which incorporates RSS support.
Another program I like is the Blog Explosion RSS Reader.

I just finished an affiliate marketing training call with Internet Marketing Guru Jo Han Mok and Rasheed Ali.
My topic area was on blogging and blog monetization.
As a followup to the call, here’re my notes for the participants.
Blogging at blogger.com and wordpress.com
It’s ok to test out the blogging waters when you’re starting out, however, do note that these services are targeted at hobbyists and recreational bloggers.
You’re subjected to their terms of service, which unsurprisingly prohibits promotion of adult, gaming, pharmaceutical-related niches among others.
Violation of their terms of service means they may forcibly take back the domain if you happen to violate their rules (inadvertedly or otherwise).
If you build up the Google PageRank or traffic to the domain, you don’t have the option of selling the domain (which could be value in the hundreds of thousand or millions for a high value, high traffic domain). The blog service provider owns the domain. Good luck (more…)
