Should You Sacrifice Top Placing In Blog Awards?

A key metric typically used to measure blog popularity is the number of bloglines subscribers or feedburner subscribers. These measures give an idea of the number of subscribers you have to your RSS feed.

In theory, this represents your “subscriber core” and indicates how ‘sticky’ your content is.

You might think this blog fares abysmally, according to Text Link Ads “Blog Juice” calculator. text link ads blog juice

A 5.4 out of a supposed 10 ranking?

Let’s look at the components of the score:

  • Bloglines: the number of Bloglines subscribers (accounts for 40% of score)
  • Alexa: ranking determines 15%
  • Technorati: 30%
  • Links: Inbound links 15% (determined fromTechnorati).

From the example above, the low number of bloglines subscribers (32) has hit my rankings hard.

De-emphasizing bloglines subscribers and feedburner subscribers (also a set of RSS subscribers) would be detrimental to your rankings.

Why would anyone want to do this?

In that case, why would a blogger deliberately aim for low RSS subscriber numbers?

You MUST Take Ownership of Your Blog

It seems like common sense, but if your blog carries your name or your businesses’ name, then the weight of monitoring or moderating the blog lies on you or a representative you name.you must take ownership of your blog

A tactic among spam marketers seems to be placing innocent comments on blog posts to do a recon on the comment procedures on a blog.

It typically involves a generic comment like “Hi” or “Nice blog”, and it may have an originating domain, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Which seems innocent and you might be tempted (more…)

Does Onsite Event Blogging Provide Any Value? And Nicole Eggers Video Broadcasts

Sleepyblogger Robyn Tippins questions whether live blogging at the sidelines of an event has much value (Liveblogging Of Any Value To Those Not There?)

I can identify with her sentiment that: “I’m wondering (aloud I suppose) if I’m the only one who finds the typical disjointed, rambling liveblogging posts are of any real value to offsite readers?

Here’s my take:

It’s nothing to do with whether the blogging is live or not.

It has everything to do with your content and your presentation.

As an example, look at presenter Nicole Eggers on WebProNews.

Besides being very easy on the eyes, Nicole presents WebProNews updates throughout the day.

What makes readers continue to come back is the amount of useful information they get within the 2-4 minute video broadcasts.

Launch of Laura Alter’s Blog

I first got to know of Laura Alter from PlanetAndrea (aka Andrea Schoemaker).

Laura attended the inaugural Elite Retreat and has been very successful in her brick-and-mortar computer business and is also owner of the popular NotebookForums site too.

Besides having 3 sweet kids (her 5 year old plays a mean game of warcraft), she’s pretty tech savvy.

Check out her blog:

Do You Spend Too Much Time Blogging? Blog Strategically

A complaint I hear is that “blogging takes too much time”.

And then I find out the Internet Marketer has only filed one or two weeks worth of posts before giving up.

Here’s a strategy of developing blog content quickly.

  • Multitask

As you’re surfing the net for research, build a file of interest content, note down their URLs, network with your fellow Internet Marketers, catch up on trends.

  • Develop a Position/Opinion

Think of how the development affects you, or your niche. What is the impact, what are the implications? How will it affect your current plans. Come up with (more…)

MyBlogLog Social Traffic Credibility and Attempts To Cripple Spammers

MyBlogLog can be a source of highly-targeted, relevant and free traffic if you know how to use it effectively.

But increasingly, spam marketers have been bombarding the social networking site, such that there is a toggle to view messages only from members of your social network (and cut out messages from non-members (potentially spammers).

MyBlogLog obviously views the matter seriously enough to take further measures.

Witness the latest salvo:

I was in the midst of posting messages to PepperJam’s Kris “Mr Pepperjam” Jones and Robyn Martin‘s MyBlogLog profiles. [To comment on the latest Meet the PepperJam Team video]

There’s now a daily message cap of about 20 messages sent per day.

In my opinion, MyBlogLog is one of the most, if not THE site, for (more…)
