bacon and eggs internet marketing

constant debate: Free. or for a fee.

idea behind it is list building

“the money is in the list” – meaning the bigger the list, the better.
but is this really true?

Conversions different.
might get in 10 free opt-ins for every customer who’s bought something from you and opt-ed into your list.

I’ve built list of thousands based on opt-ins to get a free product, but generally not very responsive.

some dynamics in which a free product can work.
for example, viral report, with opt-in call to action at end of the book. so if they haven’t read your book, they may never discover your mailing list.

which could be a good thing.
if you don’t have a rabid fan, and you just have someone who’s merely got a passing interest, you might not want them in your list.

list segregation.
prospects
customers
VIPs
–you want your VIP list as large as possible, means filtering leads.

—in any personal relationship, issue of commitment
think of this analogy:
breakfast of bacon and eggs.
The chicken is merely interested and probably a little involved.
The pig is committed.

Think about that, and have a good weekend.

Totally agree! Build a responsive, targeted list is always marketer intention. A list with 1 mil random visitor is will do no more good than a list of 100 with specific needs of product(s).

My opinion, freebie also has their contribution: buzzing the good tools and bringing in more traffic (so that we can refine the list from here!)

Correct me if I am wrong, may be we can convert freebie with advertisement ?

I’m not sure what you mean, unless you’re saying to monetize freebie seekers with adsense.

But then building an adsense site and catering only to freebie seekers defeats the whole purpose of building a solid business along the lines of what I’m talking about, doesn’t it?

I’ve not seen any online or offline business survive long by giving away stuff (whether products or content)….

Yes, adsense is just one of the in-efficient way to build business.

What I really mean is that giving away free “viral” report or software with link point back to your web site / product you are promoting.

But the key to success is the product itself must be “spread worthy”, something that really contribute and make freebie seeker want to spread for us.

I haven’t test this method yet, but I seen many using this method, and I will try it soon.

Giving away an e-book for free is a great way to expand your reach on a blog. For example if you give an ebook away with some of your best content that you have posted about and offer “reseller rights” people will put it on eBay and sell it for a dollar. Anything over their listing fees is profit and everyone distributed is another potential customer for you. Of course this is over simplifying the process. Its not as easy as this sounds but it does work.
