The Blind Sex Press and Domain Names in Affiliate Marketing

Be careful when selecting domain names because…your domain name may mean something that you’re not aware of.

While surfing through the PepperJam affiliate network‘s list of merchants, I came across an interesting banner:

blindsexpress

Because all the letters in the domain name are in lowercase, you’re open to interpret it in a different way.

One way could be “Blind Sex Press”. Leaving one to wonder…what is that?

Using a series of uppercase characters can help visitors instantly recognize the domain and can help pre-qualify the traffic.

In this case the merchant, Blinds Express, could consider changing their creatives to read BlindsExpress.com, instead of blindsexpress.com.

Affiliates can benefit too, because it will increase the return on their marketing spend.

Affiliate Summit East 2009 Preview and Highlights

One of the benefits of affiliate marketing is having a dedicated tradeshow/seminar each year, organized by Shawn Collins and Missy Ward. The upcoming Affiliate Summit East in New York city in July promises to raise the bar higher.

Having attended the Affiliate Summits since 2007, it’s amazing to see how Shawn and Missy have continued to raise the bar with each event. The increasing attendee numbers are testament to this.

In addition to invite industry leaders to present, the Affiliate Summit adopts a charity each show, raising donation to the worthwhile cause. The charity partner for ASE is Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.

The ASE will see TWO keynote sessions presented by social media specialist Chris Brogan and Help A Reporter Online (HARO) founder Peter Shankman.

In addition to the keynotes, the tradeshow (more…)

Is MyInternetBusiness A Scam?

Embedded in the emails sent to this blog was an offer to “find out more” about MyInternetBusiness, a business opportunity targeted at the “Recessionaire” (someone who accumulates wealth during a recession), but is it really all its cracked up to be?

myinternetbusiness scam

First some warning signs – emails came in with a suggestion to visit an affiliate link.

Next the opt-in page lists promises of:

  • “$30k in 30 days”
  • Do Nothing Make Money
  • We do it all for you
  • Passive Income

While I’m not one to pass on a free handout, especially if some other poor sap hardworking guy is out there working his butt off to earn me $30k a month, I just have to wonder (more…)

Dealing With Web 2.0’s Demographic Battlelines and Social Media Fatigue

According to a recent research report, social media users appear to have segmented themselves primarily along demographic criteria. Additionally, as social media channels grow in sophistication, it appears that the sheer amount of information flowing through these channels may be exerting a hefty time and psychological cost on users.

In a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project report, internet users in the 18-53 year old age bracket (as at 2009) represent a higher proportion of internet users, compared to their numerical percentage in the general population.

“Older boomers” aged 54-63, make up 13% of the general population and are on par, constituing 13% of internet users.

The “Silent generation” aged 64-72, who make up 9% of the general population, amount to 7% of internet users.

The “GI generation” aged 73 and older and are 9% of the population, only represent 4% of internet users.

Are Soft Marketing Tactics The Wave Of The Future?

The world of marketing provides an interesting, insightful and sometimes bizzare look into the world of consumer behavior.

There’re marketing tactics which some will consider hard selling, while others consider amusing and engaging like TV informercial-based tactics of pitchmen Billy Mays who’s recently frontlining his own reality series Pitchmen.

And then there’s Israel-born Vince Shlomi, better known as Vince Offer, who’s gain some fame promoting the ShamWow cleaning product. What may not be as well known is that Vince got a foothold in direct marketing with promoting his movie The Underground Comedy Movie (Vince also initiated a lawsuit against the Farrelly Brothers and 20th Century Fox for alleged similarities between his movie and There’s Something About Mary – which Vince subsequently lost).

So it appears that consumers are ok with being marketed with as long as they are entertained – giving rise to the golden commandment of marketing – Don’t be boring.

What I’ve been seeing is a rise in “soft marketing” where the promotion of products and services are less “in your face” and while it might not elicit the type of instant buy response that direct marketing might get, it can be more effective and possibly insidious in the long term.

How To Effectively Pitch A Product Or Service

Whether you’re an affiliate applying to join a network, a product owner hoping to get some publicity on a blog or website, or a consultant planning to solicit business from a new or existing client, a large proportion of your success depends on your ability to pitch your application/product/services effectively.

Hence “pitching” and the launch of the recent TV reality program, Pitchmen, featuring pitchman Billy Mays, will provide some inspiration for getting your application accepted, your product featured or a consulting contract inked.

The #1 rule is pitch club (besides not (more…)
