Friday Podcast: Social Media Explained With Sam Harrelson

sam harrelsonThis week I got the recently nominated “Minister for Social Media” (yes, he drinks beer and curses…sorry, Jangro) Sam Harrelson on skype, and we chatted about the social media scene.

It’s the “thin client” computing discussion which Sam was refering to at the tailend of Geekcast Episode 13. (you knowyou’ve been listening to a lot of Geekcasts, when you’re typing “http://geekcast.fm/archives/category/geekcast/” into the browser address bar – bookmarks are overrated anyway…)

Besides having Sam do a rundown on his myriad of blogs/websites, we also talked about sci-fi, his new startup Big Idea Agency (the site design seems to change every couple of days, and viewing the page source sometimes shows some weird/arcane trivia).

Yes, there’s lots of social goodness ahead (together with a definition of “cloud computing”).

Friday Podcast: The Future Of Affiliate Marketing With Shawn Collins

I had a chance to pick Affiliate Summit Co-Founder and affiliate advocate (and now affiliate marketer) Shawn Collins’ brain for his thoughts on the future of affiliate marketing, how affiliate networks and affiliates can deal with the fact that more than 80% of affiliate managers have more than 300 affiliates on their roster (about 20% of affiliate managers in Shawn’s survey handle more than 10,000 affiliates….pretty unreal).

And we also talk shop about how networks can up their game.

Our discussion built on a number of points raised in Shawn’s AffStat 2008 report in which 200 affiliate managers were surveyed and disclosed information about the industry. It was certainly nothing short of an eye-opening experience.

WhoIsAndrewWee.com 2.0 Launched…

If you tried to access this blog over the weekend, you might’ve noticed that it was up and it went down at times. I’m glad to say that we’ve moved the blog from a shared hosting account to a dedicated server and for the most part the bugs have been ironed out. (barring some file permissions and folder permissions).

[Note: the “broken database” comments you see are part of some inherent bugs in the WordPress 2.3.X series, but the comments are still going through]

In addition, we’ve ported over a couple hundred megs of content and if there’re broken graphics or missing MP3s or videos, drop us a line at the contact form.

Here’s one blogging tip:

If I had to do it all over again, I would’ve put the blog in a /blog/ directory and have the index.html be a “directory” page.

Yes, you can do it with one of the WP plugins to have your “landing page” be a “page”, but it’s not the same thing…

Back on the blogging front…

There could be a number of major enhancements in store, though we’ll likely start at the end of tax season (it’s a scramble filing tax statements from multiple companies and checking for regulatory compliance).

But while our tech team doing planning for the year ahead…

  • Are there any “wishlist” items you might like to see on this blog?
  • What’ve you enjoyed reading?
  • What’s the single post or page you’ve found the most useful OR enjoyed OR both?

List them in the post comments below.

Friday Podcast: “So You Want To Be An Internet Business Consultant?”…Featuring Robyn Tippins

robyn tippinsRobyn Tippins who was formerly Yahoo! MyBlogLog community manager and now Yahoo! program manager for developer experience, happens to own two successful blogs, SleepyBlogger and GamingAndTech.

I’m not sure how long I’ve known Robyn, but I know it’s probably about 2.5 to 3 years.

I first got to know her through my blogging efforts and later she invited me to join the MyBlogLog Advisory Group.

I don’t think a whole lot of people are aware that Robyn racked up about $200,000 in consulting fees in the year before joining Yahoo! and relocated from Virginia to California to take up the position.

During the Friday Podcast, I found out how Robyn got started (generating $30,000 a month from a single physical product), how she branched into consulting, including taking on projects for some of the biggest companies out there, and how someone aspiring to enter the business/web consulting field can get started.

As always, there’re lots of gems in this one.

Friday Podcast: Email Marketing Tips With The Aweber Autoresponder

For most marketers out there, autoresponder services like Aweber are a blackbox…most people will have a vague notion that email autoresponders are accessed via your web browser, you get some HTML code and place an opt-in form on your website or blog, people submit their name and email address, it appears in the autoresponder database, and you send them email, and sales comes flooding in…simple right?

Oh and they help negotiate with ISPs to ensure your email is delivered, and rotate IPs on their email servers, so it doesn’t get tagged as a “bad” IP.

Actually there’s much more than that, and Aweber’s education marketing manager Justin Premick gave an insiders view of the inner workings of Aweber.

More importantly, we discussed:

  • The relationship marketing principles involved in maintaining a successful email marketing list
  • Companies which are already successfully using email in their marketing efforts
  • Resources to help you bring your email campaigns to the next level
  • Tips for affiliate marketers incorporating email into their existing PPC and SEO campaigns
  • And we also unearthed a tip which could help you massively increase your results from promoting CPA affiliate offers…

It all happens here at the Friday Podcast.
